The question also exposes their engineering support level. Suppliers with weak technical teams will dodge specifics. Suppliers with proper process control will often offer to share process parameter sheets. That document becomes your quality benchmark for future orders.

What happens if my actual usage scenario differs from my initial spec?

I spec'd containers for warehouse storage. Customers used them outdoors. The material degraded under UV exposure. The supplier said "You didn't specify outdoor use." They were right—I assumed they'd ask about use conditions.

Strong suppliers ask about your use case before finalizing specs: storage conditions, chemical exposure, stress scenarios, temperature ranges. If they don't ask, they won't know how to adjust specifications when reality differs from assumptions.

Also ask about their modification process. If changes require new tooling, who pays? If it's a spec error on your side versus a performance gap they should have caught, the cost allocation should differ. Suppliers who've thought this through will have clear policies. Suppliers who haven't will make up rules when problems arise.
